Delays & Disruptions

Tarmac Delay

A tarmac delay is time you spend stuck inside the aircraft on the ground — either after boarding but before take-off, or after landing before reaching a gate. It's exhausting because you can't leave your seat freely and information is often thin. In the United States, rules limit how long airlines may hold you: broadly three hours for domestic flights and four for international ones, after which you must be given the chance to get off, and airlines must provide water and working toilets, plus a snack within two hours. Other regions rely on the airline's own policy, so protection varies. Stay hydrated, keep medication in your hand luggage rather than the hold, and note the timings — they can matter if you later claim for the overall disruption.
